WELCOME TO THE ROTARY CLUB
OF ARBURY
WEBSITE
I am proud to be
a founder member of the Rotary Club of Arbury which was Chartered in 1978. With
1.3million members worldwide Rotary International is the biggest service
organisation in the world. As members of Rotary International we give of our
time freely as our motto “Service above Self” signifies.
The Rotary Club of Arbury supports a number of local projects
such as the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, the Air Ambulance, Help For Heroes, Acorns
Children's Hospice etc. An international project which we, like all other
Rotary Clubs support, is “Thanks for Life – End Polio Now” campaign. Rotary is
collaborating with the World Health Organisation and others to try and wipe out
this crippling disease.
Our Club has a programme of many interesting speakers attending
our weekly meetings. We have local people working for the benefit of the local
community, visiting overseas students and many charities each presenting a very
different view on life.
We recently contributed towards the cost of a group of young
people from the Camp Hill Children's Group attending an activity weekend on
Cannock Chase. In early July, at the Civic Hall in Bedworth, we presented in
association with three local dance schools, DANCE X 3 with approximately 250
young performers enthralling a capacity audience. Annually we hold “Safety Show”
which this year saw around 700 school children from years 1 & 2 attending. They
were told of the dangers in the home, on the roads and in the swimming pool.
They saw the inside of a St John ambulance, were told of the dangers of fire by
the Fire and Rescue Service and also instructed in the use of the 999 emergency
phone calls.
The Rotary Club of Arbury is a very friendly club and is very
active in trying to help others less fortunate be they local or overseas. With
collections and donations we were able to dispatch seven “Shelter Boxes” to
Haiti to help the survivors of the earthquake.
Joining Rotary is by invitation but if you think you would like
to put something back into society then elsewhere on this website are details of
who to contact if you are interested in being a member of the Rotary Club of
Arbury.

WHERE IS ARBURY?
The Rotary Club
of Arbury is part of Rotary International’s District 1060.
District 1060 is at the
heart of England, covering Birmingham and the West Midlands, including parts of
Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire. From
Lichfield in the North to Shipston-on-Stour in the South, from Rugby in the East
to Bewdley in the West it serves
those multi-racial communities which are truly at England’s heart.
The Rotary Club of Arbury is based in Nuneaton,
which is a Warwickshire town very close to the geographical centre of England
and in George Eliot country.
The
name Arbury comes
from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the
home of the Newdegate family for centuries.
The author George Eliot ( Mary
Ann Evans) was born in 1819 on the Arbury Estate and lived in Griff House ( now
a hotel) for 21 years. She is commemorated in many ways in the town. The large
George Eliot Hospital and the nearby Mary Ann Evans Hospice are living memorials
to her and her book titles and their characters feature widely as names in the
town, the schools and hospital wards; there is a nice statue to her memory in
the town centre.
Rotary International
is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional
people, with some 1.2 million members in over 200 countries world-wide.
Great Britain and Ireland
has over 56,000 Rotarians in 1838 Clubs, helping those in need and working
towards world understanding and peace. 'Service above Self' is the
organisation's motto.
