WHERE IS ARBURY?

The Rotary Club of Arbury is based in Nuneaton, which is a Warwickshire town very close to the geographical centre of England and in George Eliot country.

The name Arbury comes from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the home of the Newdegate family for centuries.

The author George Eliot ( Mary Ann Evans) was born in 1819 on the Arbury Estate and lived in Griff House ( now a hotel) for 21 years. She is commemorated in many ways in the town. The large George Eliot Hospital and the nearby Mary Ann Evans Hospice are living memorials to her and her book titles and their characters feature widely as names in the town, the schools and hospital wards; there is a nice statue to her memory in the town centre.

The good road and rail system leads to thousands of people coming to the well-known Nuneaton Saturday market, which started in the 13th. Century and contributed to Nuneaton becoming a regional centre. The town has passed through phases of being a ribbon weaving centre, mining and engineering were important in the last century and brick production, textiles and hat production have featured in the area. The local canal system supported the early industries, especially mining. These days a multiplicity of industries, businesses and services are carried on in the town and the rapidly expanding industrial estates.

A good network of local roads is coming to fruition but the past has not been forgotten and the town boasts some fine, late Victorian buildings in its attractive and modernised centre. The lovely floral Riversley Park, with its Museum and Art Gallery, and linked to the George Eliot Memorial Garden, is complemented by the floral traffic islands, central reservations and hanging baskets throughout the town. Many awards have been won in the Britain in Bloom competitions.

The writer acknowledges, with thanks, the help of John Burton with some historical facts in these paragraphs.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF ARBURY TODAY.

The Club structure is based on the usual Rotary model and in addition to the Club Council, the Rotary Club of Arbury operates with 3 Committees, namely Club Service, Community and Vocational Service and International/Foundation,  With the exception of the Club President, each member is allocated to a specific Committee, with the President attending as time allows.

All Club meetings start with a meal, in the manner set by the Founder of Rotary International in 1905, namely Paul Harris. Members of other Clubs, and local guests and friends, often join us and an air of conviviality pervades, the Arbury Club being  acknowledged as a very friendly Club. The general pattern of meetings is to have a Business meeting once every 4 weeks and a Speaker meeting on the other 3 weeks, all after the Dinner. Members take it in turn to provide and host the Speaker and some are " in - house ". A very wide set of interesting topics is covered, including serious, educational, witty and amusing and combinations of these and most are usually illustrated in some form.

The Arbury Club certainly adheres to the Rotary motto " Service above Self " and members work hard, via their Committees, to maintain a vigorous and worthwhile series of projects, whether they be relative to the local community, the Rotary District 1060, national or international. All work starts at Committee level and other Club members become involved as the project or social event develops. Some projects or support schemes may be " one-off", but most are designed to be continuous  or periodic, such as annually.

Regular meetings are held on Thursdays at 7.30 p.m. for 8 p.m. at

Weston Hall Hotel, Mill Lane, Weston in Arden, Nuneaton.
