WELCOME TO THE  ROTARY CLUB OF ARBURY WEBSITE

Please explore it and discover the meaning of friendship, co-operation and the enjoyment of helping others by following the Rotary motto of ‘Service before Self’

It is my privilege to serve as Club President for 2011/12.

So what is Rotary?

It is a worldwide organisation with 1.2 million members from 162 countries. The background of members varies widely covering men and women, working or retired, from all professions.

In Britain and Northern Ireland alone there are 1750 Clubs. The West Midlands has 68 Clubs, of which Arbury is one, with a total of around 1800 members.

We at Arbury Rotary support a number of local projects such as the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, the Air Ambulance, Help For Heroes, and Acorns Children's Hospice. An international project, which we and all other Rotary Clubs support, is "Thanks for Life - End Polio Now" campaign. Rotary is collaborating with the World Health Organization and others to eradicate this crippling disease.

We are local people working for the benefit of the world community.

Our Club has an active programme of events with interesting speakers attending our weekly meetings including visiting overseas students (sponsored by Rotary International), representatives from various charities and a wide variety of specialist each presenting a different view on life

The Rotary Club of Arbury is a very friendly club and is pro-active in trying to help others less fortunate be they local or overseas. Utilising local collections and organising fund raising events we are able to respond to pressing local, national and international emergency situations by providing, where appropriate, service and donations

Rotary’s theme for 2011/12 is “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity” and it is the object of our Club is to develop the acquaintance with like minded people in order to encourage and foster the ideal of service to the community, promote high ethical standards and further international understanding through contact with other Rotary Clubs around the world.

WHERE IS ARBURY?

The Rotary Club of Arbury is part of Rotary International’s District 1060. District 1060 is at the heart of England, covering Birmingham and the West Midlands, including parts of Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire. From Lichfield in the North to Shipston-on-Stour in the South, from Rugby in the East to Bewdley in the West it serves those multi-racial communities which are truly at England’s heart.

The Rotary Club of Arbury is based in Nuneaton, which is a Warwickshire town very close to the geographical centre of England and in George Eliot country.

The name Arbury comes from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the home of the Newdegate family for centuries.

The author George Eliot ( Mary Ann Evans) was born in 1819 on the Arbury Estate and lived in Griff House ( now a hotel) for 21 years. She is commemorated in many ways in the town. The large George Eliot Hospital and the nearby Mary Ann Evans Hospice are living memorials to her and her book titles and their characters feature widely as names in the town, the schools and hospital wards; there is a nice statue to her memory in the town centre.

Rotary International is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people, with some 1.2 million members in over 200 countries world-wide.

Great Britain and Ireland has over 56,000 Rotarians in 1838 Clubs, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. 'Service above Self' is the organisation's motto.
