WELCOME TO THE ROTARY CLUB
OF ARBURY
WEBSITE
FORTHCOMING EVENT

Welcome to our
web site. Rotary is a world wide organisation, founded in 1905, and is now
established across the world. The Rotary Club
of Arbury
was founded in 1979 and is situated in
Nuneaton
and Bedworth. We meet most Thursdays at 7.30pm for a meal at 8pm at Weston Hall
Hotel in Bulkington and our meetings finish at 10pm approx. Our club has 33
members and we take our name from Arbury Hall, the home of Viscount and Lady
Daventry, situated on the west side of
Nuneaton.
Rotary is
principally a service organisation but a very important aspect is to mix the
service with fellowship. Arbury Rotary Club is involved in a range of activities
both locally and internationally. We have a Safety Show which runs for 3 days
and is visited by over 700 children aged 6-8 years from the area, we arrange
activities for and support clubs for both young people and the older citizens.
We also take disadvantaged children from a local school to Drayton Manor each
year. In addition this year the club has teamed up with a Rotary Club in India
to apply for a matching grant to provide vehicles to deliver mid day school
meals to childen many of whom live below the poverty line. Through the national
and world organisation local students can become Ambassadorial Scholars and
study in many parts of the world on short study periods or longer ones. With the
help of other organisations we send Shoeboxes to needy areas and Aqua boxes and
other disaster relief aids to countries and areas in need.
I have been a
Member for just over 6 years and have found that Rotary provides a fulfilling
set of activities as well providing and excellent opportunity for fellowship.
Arbury is
similar to many Rotary clubs throughout the UK so if these activities appeal to
you and you would like to know more please read on through this web site, read
about our many other activities and make contact with us.

WHERE IS ARBURY?
The Rotary Club
of Arbury is part of Rotary International’s District 1060.
District 1060 is at the
heart of England, covering Birmingham and the West Midlands, including parts of
Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire. From
Lichfield in the North to Shipston-on-Stour in the South, from Rugby in the East
to Bewdley in the West it serves
those multi-racial communities which are truly at England’s heart.
The Rotary Club of Arbury is based in Nuneaton,
which is a Warwickshire town very close to the geographical centre of England
and in George Eliot country.
The
name Arbury comes
from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the
home of the Newdegate family for centuries.
The author George Eliot ( Mary
Ann Evans) was born in 1819 on the Arbury Estate and lived in Griff House ( now
a hotel) for 21 years. She is commemorated in many ways in the town. The large
George Eliot Hospital and the nearby Mary Ann Evans Hospice are living memorials
to her and her book titles and their characters feature widely as names in the
town, the schools and hospital wards; there is a nice statue to her memory in
the town centre.
Rotary International
is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional
people, with some 1.2 million members in over 200 countries world-wide.
Great Britain and Ireland
has over 56,000 Rotarians in 1838 Clubs, helping those in need and working
towards world understanding and peace. 'Service above Self' is the
organisation's motto.
