PRESIDENT DAVID
HELPS
at
POLIO
ERADICATION INITIATIVE
in
Lucknow, Uttah Pradesh, Northern India
February 6/7th
2010

David linked
up with local Rotarians and other volunteers for a Polio awareness Rally and
National Immunisation Days on February 6/7th. This is in India’s
largest state and most crowded with a population of 190 million. On these
days 67 million children can be vaccinated across India. Because the
problem is still so great every child gets the drops 5 times and when the
children get vaccinated their fingers are marked with purple colour.
During his
stay is in India David will also be visiting Mumbai and Delhi where he will
be staying with friends experiencing life in these very crowded Cities for
short periods.
HAITI SHELTERBOX
APPEAL
23rd January 2010

When the news of the Haiti disaster broke the
Rotary Club of Arbury provided two shelterboxes to be dispatched
immediately.
Upon hearing about this the Mayor of Nuneaton & Bedworth Tom Wilson gave his
backing to the project. He urged the people of Nuneaton to support the
Rotary Shelterbox Appeal to help relieve the devastation caused by the
recent earthquake in Haiti.
A collection held on Saturday 23 January in the Market Place of Nuneaton
town centre was supported most generously and it means two more shelter
boxes are now on their way
PRESIDENT DAVID
prepares
for his POLIO PLUS mission to India

David
is among a party of 34 Rotary volunteers travelling to the historic city of
Lucknow in North East India on 2 February to take part in a National
Immunisation Day (NID) in the effort to eradicate polio from the world.
David says ‘The target is
to immunise over two days 157million children aged under five years. As you
can imagine an army of volunteers, including local Rotarians and health
staff, are required to participate in this massive undertaking. It’s a real
community effort requiring a huge publicity campaign beforehand to tell
people about the NID.’
‘We live in a global village. What is India’s problem today,
could become our problem tomorrow. We must pledge our support to the
dedication and commitment of the people involved in eradicating polio.’
Thanks for Life / End

CHEQUE PRESENTATIONS
20th August 2009

Money raised, in
association with The Rotary Club of Arbury, by three local dance studios,
Nuneaton Dancentre, Tracy Porter School of Dance and Judith Vardy Studios of
Performing Arts, has been presented by Club President David Clayfield to the
Neil Porter Fund in memory of Neil who was fatally injured in a car crash.
On behalf of family the cheque was collected by Miss Susan Porter.

Donna Stokes, from
the British Heart Foundation, receives a cheque for £500 from Club President
David Clayfield. The money was raised from a very successful dance show
held at the Civic Hall in Bedworth. DANCE X 3 was presented by the Rotary
Club of Arbury in association with Nuneaton Dancentre, Tracy Porter School
of Dance and Judith Vardy Studios of Performing Arts. The evening was an
outstanding success and performed by 170 young dancers to a very
appreciative audience.

Clive
Knight, the Chairman of the Rotary Club of Arbury Community Service
Committee
presents Emma Breeze, a 21 years old
Honours Graduate in Dance, with an I pod to assist her in becoming
established as a Community Dance Artist. She is working within Nuneaton and
Warwickshire teaching groups of people in Care Homes, Disability Centres and
Community Centres who would not normally get the chance to dance.
Emma says “My sessions in all of these community groups work
with disabled adults and the elderly, I lead
them through a variety of exercises which involve lots of
different styles of music and the use of
different props such as
scarves, balls, parachutes, bubble machines and feathers. I am really
inspired when I teach these people, as they really do love to dance, the
benefits for each individual are also very apparent. Each week the
individual grows in confidence as their mobility increases.”
She is
currently looking
for more
local groups like these to teach
DAVID TAKES THE REINS
2nd July 2009

David
Clayfield, a Consultant Traffic Engineer, is the new President of the Arbury
Club having taken over from Dick Sharrott at a special handover ceremony
held at Weston Hall Hotel.
David
said he was looking forward to his year in the top role and that he would be
supported by Don Bunney, a well known retired shop keeper, who will be the
Vice President.
The
first contact that David had with Rotary International was in 1980 when he
was selected to take part in a six week Group Study Exchange Visit to
Australia. He was sponsored on this trip by the Rotary Club of Arbury.
This proved to be a defining moment in his career and led to further
exchanges with Australian colleagues that he met during the visit. Several
years ago when the opportunity arose he became a member of Arbury Rotary
Club and his enthusiasm has widened the horizons and opened new avenues of
service for the Club.
David has
travelled widely abroad in his work and this may give us the opportunity to
link up with Rotary Clubs in India to facilitate the delivery of food and
education to children in impoverished areas.
