ROTARY CLUB OF ARBURY
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
25th May 2011

In the Seventies and Eighties Griff & Coton Cricket Club had good teams and facilities and County Cricket came to Nuneaton.  Since then things deteriorated, the facilities went into disrepair and the team slipped several leagues.  Ten years ago Michael Daniels decided to do something about it.  He introduced a programme for young cricketers from under 9's upward.  This programme has developed with over 200 youngsters who now have coaching.  Michael is at the ground most days in the season at some detriment to his own business, such is his commitment.

Further to this and only because they had a youth development programme Michael has been successful in obtaining grants to improve the facilities to the order of £100,000 over a period of ten years.  Griff now has an electronic scoreboard, new mowers and roller, improved drainage, new practice nets and other items.

The photographs show President Don Bunney making the presentation to Michael Daniels with some young cricketers showing their approval!

FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
9th April 2011

The Rotary Club of Arbury were in the Nuneaton ASDA store  along with professionals from the George Eliot Hospital who gave all who wished a free blood pressure check.

The club joined scores of Rotary clubs across the UK taking to the high streets and offering blood pressure checks as part of Rotary’s Stroke & Health Awareness Day 2011

This is the most recent example of ASDA working with the Rotary Club of Arbury to provide a service to the local community.

The annual awareness day is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to help people better understand the relationship between high blood pressure [hypertension] and stroke. It is estimated 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the UK each year could be prevented. This condition can easily be controlled. On average, the initiative sees around 13,500 people across the UK step up to have their blood pressure taken. Last year, nearly 3,000 were advised to see their GP for more tests and a further 196 urged to seek medical advice immediately.

Celebrity Experts from T.V. and Fieldings Auctioneers of Stourbridge joined forces with The Rotary Club to raise a total of over £650 for The Mary-Ann Evans Hospice and the "Help for Heroes" charity.

Over 250 people brought their Antiques for the experts to identify and value, some people were delighted at the valuations and some were glad "just to know what it was".  Items "Found" included some beautiful 1950s toys, splendid pocket watches, Chinese porcelain, good paintings both antique and modern, and a beautiful burr walnut workbox from the early 19th century.

Rotarian Roger Barnes thanked everyone for attending, it was a very enjoyable and interesting day for all and special thanks were due to Weston Hall Hotel for supporting the event and providing such a superb venue.

It is hoped that similar events can be held in the future.

CHEQUE PRESENTATION
27th January 2011

President Don Bunney hands over a cheque to Danny Oldacre whose son Jack suffers from Netherton's Syndrome, which sees the skin growing three times faster than normal and leaves it bright red.  Jack's condition requires constant treatment throughout every day to avoid further complications

In the Uk there are only 75 known cases of Netherton's Syndrome which is caused by damage in a gene called  SPINK5. There is still no treatment that cures the disease, but efforts are being made to find this cure at Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK, and various hospitals in other counties including America.

Jack's parents are very keen to raise money for the Ichthyosis Support Group which seeks to promote awareness and support research into this group of skin problems that include Netherton's syndrome.

MAYOR'S VISIT TO ARBURY ROTARY CLUB
20th January 2011

The Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Councillor Don Navarro and his wife Jennifer visited the club and he spoke about his reasons for launching a charitable appeal during his mayoral year.

Councillor Navarro, who represents Exhall ward, is the 38th Mayor of the Borough.  For the Mayor's Charity he has opted to support the Special Care Baby Unit at the George Eliot Hospital.  It's a deserving cause and one that is close to the Mayor’s heart as his own son, Don Junior, was born ten weeks early and was reliant on the skill and hard work of the staff at that time.  The Mayor has embarked on a year of fundraising events to benefit the charity appeal.
