Club
History
There
were in the Borough
of Nuneaton and Bedworth in the 1970's two Rotary Clubs, not surprisingly
named The Rotary Club of Nuneaton and The Rotary Club of Bedworth. Both
were active lunchtime Clubs and the Nuneaton Club was approaching its
optimum size. There was an urgent need for a new Rotary Club and in the
changing business and social scene of the time, an evening Club was
envisaged.
Eighteen interested men
met with local senior Rotarians on April 6th 1978 and a new
Rotary Club was conceived. The Inaugural Dinner of the Rotary Club of Arbury
took place on Sept. 7th 1978, at The Chase Hotel, in Nuneaton and
the new Club was Chartered on Dec. 5th 1978. The name Arbury comes
from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the
home of the Newdegate family for centuries. The Elizabethan mansion was
gothicised by Sir Roger Newdegate in the 18th century.
The Arbury Club operates
across the whole of Nuneaton and is well known as an active Club, initiating
many schemes locally and participating at District, National and
International levels. There were 30 Charter Members, of whom 8 are still
active members of the Club.
