CHEQUE PRESENTATIONS
20th August 2009

Money raised, in
association with The Rotary Club of Arbury, by three local dance studios,
Nuneaton Dancentre, Tracy Porter School of Dance and Judith Vardy Studios of
Performing Arts, has been presented by Club President David Clayfield to the
Neil Porter Fund in memory of Neil who was fatally injured in a car crash.
On behalf of family the cheque was collected by Miss Susan Porter.

Donna Stokes, from
the British Heart Foundation, receives a cheque for £500 from Club President
David Clayfield. The money was raised from a very successful dance show
held at the Civic Hall in Bedworth. DANCE X 3 was presented by the Rotary
Club of Arbury in association with Nuneaton Dancentre, Tracy Porter School
of Dance and Judith Vardy Studios of Performing Arts. The evening was an
outstanding success and performed by 170 young dancers to a very
appreciative audience.

Clive
Knight, the Chairman of the Rotary Club of Arbury Community Service
Committee
presents Emma Breeze, a 21 years old
Honours Graduate in Dance, with an I pod to assist her in becoming
established as a Community Dance Artist. She is working within Nuneaton and
Warwickshire teaching groups of people in Care Homes, Disability Centres and
Community Centres who would not normally get the chance to dance.
Emma says “My sessions in all of these community groups work
with disabled adults and the elderly, I lead
them through a variety of exercises which involve lots of
different styles of music and the use of
different props such as
scarves, balls, parachutes, bubble machines and feathers. I am really
inspired when I teach these people, as they really do love to dance, the
benefits for each individual are also very apparent. Each week the
individual grows in confidence as their mobility increases.”
She is
currently looking
for more
local groups like these to teach
DAVID TAKES THE REINS
2nd July 2009

David
Clayfield, a Consultant Traffic Engineer, is the new President of the Arbury
Club having taken over from Dick Sharrott at a special handover ceremony
held at Weston Hall Hotel.
David
said he was looking forward to his year in the top role and that he would be
supported by Don Bunney, a well known retired shop keeper, who will be the
Vice President.
The
first contact that David had with Rotary International was in 1980 when he
was selected to take part in a six week Group Study Exchange Visit to
Australia. He was sponsored on this trip by the Rotary Club of Arbury.
This proved to be a defining moment in his career and led to further
exchanges with Australian colleagues that he met during the visit. Several
years ago when the opportunity arose he became a member of Arbury Rotary
Club and his enthusiasm has widened the horizons and opened new avenues of
service for the Club.
David has
travelled widely abroad in his work and this may give us the opportunity to
link up with Rotary Clubs in India to facilitate the delivery of food and
education to children in impoverished areas.

CHEQUE PRESENTATION

Clive
Knight and John Parkinson recently presented a cheque for £300 on behalf of
the Rotary Club of Arbury to the Nuneaton Children Contact Centre. The
cheque was received by Janet Tilson the Centre Co-ordinator with Mike Hanson
the Centre Assistant Co-ordinator looking on.
The Nuneaton Children
Contact Centre opened in 1987 and is staffed entirely by volunteers. The
Centre is open every Saturday morning and provides a meeting place where
children of separated families can enjoy contact with the parent with whom
they no longer live, in a comfortable and safe environment. It is an
independent meeting place where children are safe, where no-one takes sides,
and everything is completely confidential. The Centre provides a warm
welcome and a friendly atmosphere, with lots of toys and games for the
children and parents to play together. Anyone interested in becoming a
volunteer, or needing further information about the Centre should telephone
Janet Tilson on 02476342623.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Each year the Rotary Club of Arbury look to
find a person who has made a positive contribution to the community. The
winner this year is Ian Bednall, who has devoted much of his free time in
the past 14 years to the Boys Brigade.

Ian
works as Manager of Weston Hall Hotel in Bulkington and is not only
President in Charge of all Boys Brigade Companies in Derby but also Captain
of the 1st Burton on Trent Boys Brigade.
He is
committed to Brigade activities at least 3 nights a week, sometimes more,
and also give up many weekends and holiday time to support Brigade
activities.
Rotarian
Frank Gray, Chairman of the Vocational Committee that makes this award said:
“Ian is
an exceptional candidate for this award. Despite having a very demanding job
he unstintingly gives of his time to a very worthy organisation that does so
much to help and support young boys between the ages of 5-18 years. Ian is
an example and inspiration to us all.”
Ian is
married with three children and his wife Gill is also a Brigade Officer.
FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
18th April 2009
The
Rotary Club of Arbury were in the Nuneaton ASDA store along with
professionals from the George Eliot Hospital who gave all who wished a free
blood pressure check.
The club
joined scores of Rotary clubs across the UK taking to the high streets and
offering blood pressure checks as part of Rotary’s Stroke & Health Awareness
Day 2009
This is
the most recent example of ASDA working with the Rotary Club of Arbury to
provide a service to the local community.
The
annual awareness day is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to
help people better understand the relationship between high blood pressure
[hypertension] and stroke. It is estimated 40% of the 150,000 strokes
suffered by people in the UK each year could be prevented. This condition
can easily be controlled. On average, the initiative sees around 13,500
people across the UK step up to have their blood pressure taken. Last year,
nearly 3,000 were advised to see their GP for more tests and a further 196
urged to seek medical advice immediately.
Rotarian
Dick Sharrott, President of Arbury Rotary Club said,
“ It’s
fair to say that over the years, this event has prevented thousands of
people suffering the sometimes fatal and often disabling consequences of a
stroke. Members of this Club have certainly benefited by accepting the offer
of these checks.”
