SAFETY
SHOW
For
three consecutive days in June, Rotary Club of Arbury held its annual SAFETY
SHOW in The Manor Suite at Weston Hall Hotel, Bulkington. Over 650 year 2
children from schools in the Nuneaton and Bedworth area were told about the
dangers we meet every day.

Road safety was
represented by a local 'lollipop lady' giving instruction in how to use
crossings. A colleague, dressed as a clown, used 'bog eyed spectacles' and
'big ears that light up' to get his message across 'Look, Listen and Live'.

From large
illustrated pictures, Community Nurses, had the children pointing out
hazards in the home. Another stand showed safe play areas. By putting
pictures in accompanied by an adult or were able to play on their own.
Healthy living - hand washing - correct foods - keeping pets away from food
preparation areas and food storage completed their section.

Warwickshire Constabulary made
the point that policemen and women were friendly and easily recognised by
their uniform
and were there to help in times of Trouble. A 999
emergency telephone was manned by Club members and the Inner Wheel Club of
Arbury. This 'in house' system gave the children instruction on what to do
should an emergency arise.

Warwickshire Trading
Standards, amongst other things, explained the hazards to small children by
leaving used batteries lying around. The ubiquitous black plastic bag,
frequently used as a plaything, was used to point out the folly of using
plastic bags as toys.
All the displays
were interactive with the children being in small groups participating in
every way. They moved from one display to the next having had a ten minute
session. On Tuesday morning we were delighted to welcome the Deputy Mayor
of Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council, Councillor Janet Jackson. Mrs
Jackson toured the show and stayed for the two-hour duration.
The major financial
sponsor of SAFETY SHOW was North Warwickshire Primary Care Trust through The
Health Improvement & Well - being Theme Group. Other sponsors were Weston
Hall Hotel, Reef Exhibitions Ltd and ASDA stores Nuneaton.
At the end of each
session each child received a 'goody bag' with e.g. a colouring book, key
ring, pencil, pen, ruler etc. Most of which were kindly supplied by the
participating agencies.
SAFETY SHOW has been
a major project for the Rotary Club of Arbury for the past eleven years and
the recent one was deemed to have been 'another success' by the schools
attending and the safety agencies concerned.
